A quoted fabric width is not automatically the width available for cutting. Selvedges, coating edges, pattern repeats, inspection trimming, seams, and heading construction can all reduce usable width. Buyers should define the width basis before comparing curtain prices or approving bulk consumption.
For importers, hotel project teams, wholesalers, and private-label buyers, the quotation should state nominal roll width, usable cutting width, finished panel width, fullness basis, seam direction, repeat allowance, and waste percentage. Otherwise two suppliers may appear to quote the same curtain while calculating different fabric consumption.
Nominal roll width is the mill or supplier description. Usable width is the inspected width available after excluding damaged selvedges, coating build-up, bowing, edge distortion, or a buyer-defined trimming margin. For blackout curtain fabric, coated edges may need extra review because the coating can become uneven near the selvedge.
Ask the supplier to record width at several points across representative rolls. A single swatch width or catalog number is not enough for a high-volume cutting plan.
Finished curtain width means the width after sewing and heading construction, not the flat cut width. State whether the schedule shows one panel, one pair, or the total coverage per opening. Then apply the approved fullness ratio and any center overlap or side return requirement.
For example, a 2,000 mm track may require 4,000 mm of total finished flat curtain width at 2.0 times fullness. If the order uses two panels, the quotation basis should say whether each panel finishes at 2,000 mm before pleating or whether another convention is being used.
The supplier should show how many fabric widths are joined for each panel. Seam count affects labor, appearance, stripe matching, blackout performance, and placement near the leading edge. Wide-width sheer fabrics may avoid vertical seams, while standard-width face fabrics may require several joins.
Approve the seam map for large hotel windows, patterned curtains, and panels with a visible center opening. Do not accept a consumption figure without knowing the planned number and position of joins.
Patterned fabrics require vertical and sometimes horizontal repeat matching. Even plain fabrics need allowances for top heading, bottom hem, side hems, shrinkage, squaring, defect avoidance, and cutting loss. These allowances should be separated from the fullness calculation.
For repeat orders, keep the approved calculation sheet with the fabric article, lot reference, usable width, repeat, cut length, and seam plan. This reduces quotation drift when another production team handles the reorder.
Ask each supplier to quote fabric consumption per panel, per pair, per room type, and for the total order. The same schedule should identify whether lining, interlining, tiebacks, spare panels, and testing samples are included. This makes the price difference explainable instead of hiding it inside a broad unit rate.
